October 20, 2008Local League - Mix - Match report 21/10/08
A new indoor season. Two new faces in the team, although only one of them was playing tonight. First game against ... Tigers, who just beat us to second place last season. A very tough game to start the season with.

First set, your match reporter left himself out so that he could explain the mechanics of switching to our newbie. That left six of our oldies to display what had happened to their abilities over the summer outdoor season. Cover on the hits was poor. Service was terrible. But Stuart’s language was still on form – narrowly avoiding a red card following a controversial refereeing decision (the referee of course shall remain nameless).

Despite the negatives, an inspired substitution late on (no, I brought the newbie on, not myself) saw South Hants drag themselves back into the game, but we ended up going down 25-23.

Second set. I replace Stuart to minimise the possibility of cards coming out. Unfortunately nothing much has changed over the summer, and Eva and I end up confused about who is playing front and back court again. And still we have too many serving errors giving away free points. We stay close all the way, but never quite get on level terms, and lose 25-20.

A 2-0 defeat – we’d have to get revenge in the second half of the season.

Second match, after taking our turn refereeing (and getting cold), was against Pumas. Blanka was now setting with hubby Stuart, and it must be said, getting more plaudits than him... maybe he was purposely making her look good to keep her in a good mood! First set was never in doubt, especially as we had sorted our serving out, we ended up 25-16 winners.

Second set, and Pumas were giving me some lovely sets... the first two I slammed back down but on the third looked like a salmon leaping up to its spawning ground a couple of months early. We were taking it a little too easy in this set and having a laugh, especially when making silly errors, so the scoreline remained a bit close for comfort, but we stumbled over the winning line 25-20.

A 2-0 win to finish the evening. Good to be back.
