South Hants v Portsmouth 4/10/09 1-3 (8-25, 25-19, 12-25, 21-25)
It was derby day for South Hants who were playing the Portsmouth squad at their home venue of Purbrook Park School. Competition between the 2 teams is high and South Hants knew this was not going to be an easy match. Missing some key players, in the 1st set the team failed to focus and played the opposition game allowing them to take a comfortable lead from the early start and losing for 8 points to 25.
In the second set, however, South Hants got their act together and started playing volleyball at their level. With few mistakes, powerful hitting and good cover they dominated the set from the beginning until the end, winning the set 25-19.
The 3rd and 4th saw both teams working hard for the title. Scores were close and predicting the final result proved more difficult. Feeling the fatigue the home team started to alternate a few mistakes to some good volleyball. Unfortunately the mistakes proved to be one too many on the home team side and both sets went to Portsmouth.
This match was a good test for South Hants, giving them a few points to work on, but also showing that the new team members can give a positive contribution to future games.
Official player of the match: Blanka Wood Players’ player: Julie Cokes
